Background

Published by John David Smith

I coach communities of practice, their leaders, and their sponsors with an emphasis on stewarding technologies and designing learning events.  Learning Alliances is the name I chose for my business because it suggests that achieving learning goals involves purposeful alignment between people and that it requires commitments to collaborate and produce meaning together.  For me to help you with your community or community project, we need to negotiate an alliance to learn together and from each other.

I’m a member and leader of CPsquare, the community of practice on communities of practice. The book I’ve been working on for three and a half years with Etienne Wenger and Nancy White about technologies for communities will soon be published.  I host Com-Prac, the longest running conversation on communities of practice on the ‘Net.  I’ve been working with Etienne Wenger and Bronwyn Stuckey for many years to offer the “Foundations of Communities of Practice” workshop.  Recently we have begun offering a new workshop with a larger group of CPsquare members, called “Connected Futures,” that emphases new technologies and technology stewardship.

I’m trained in dialog, evaluation, and data analysis. I worked at the University of Colorado as a planner, institutional researcher, administrator, and technologist. I received a Bachelor’s degree from St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD and a master’s degree in planning and architecture from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. I was born and raised in Humacao, Puerto Rico.

I’m a certified meditation instructor at the Portland Shambhala Meditation Center.
